We are giving his some dna so as to improve his life. My dog's vet want to give him chemeo, i am afraid of the side effects. He is sometimes urinating blood, but in the overall condition he is in a great shape. Which is the best treatment? Thanks in advance.

There is no effective treatment for bladder cancer other than Piroxicam given at: 0.35 mg/kg weighed out at the drugstore and the powder placed inside a capsule. You also need to give Cytotec (half in the a.m. and half in the p.m.). As an example of dosage on that, a 25 pound dog is given 100 mcg (that's mcg) per day total and a 50 pound dog would get 200 mcg per day (half in the a.m. and half in the p.m. You MUST, - - REPEAT - - MUST, give the Piroxicam on a full stomach to try to avoid bleeding and my advice would be to feed the dog twice a day to keep the stomach full at all times. The other thing that will give your dog quality of life and longer time is the cancer program I put together for my own bladder cancer dog. There is a drug in Canada that I would also be considering if this were my dog. I could really use your help. Or anyone who sees this if you know the drug this person is speaking of please, let me know This is the letter that I wrote. My 10 year old Pomeranian was diagnosed with a bladder tumor about 4 months ago. We started him on Piroxicam in June and he has been having wonderful results with it, until just the other day. Within just a couple of days of starting the Piroxicam he was peeing on his own again, and within a couple of weeks his urine was clear of blood. He has been healthy and happy and back to acting like a puppy, and then 3 days ago we noticed some drops of blood on the floor. Then yesterday his first morning urine had signs of blood, and this morning it is very dark. I was searching the internet for some information and I came across the Canines in Crisis Message board where you had replied to someone who had written that their 12 year old beagle had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. You wrote that there is a drug available in Canada that they should be considering. I see that your post is from way back in 2001 so I am hoping that you still have this same address and that this letter will reach you. I am from Nova Scotia Canada and I would appreciate any information and advice you can give me. Our dog is our baby and we are devastated at the thoughts of losing him. Buddy is a 10 year old Pom and he weighs 22 pounds. Again, any info that you can give me will be appreciated. It seems you may be our last hope. Thank you so much

I have a 9 yo scottie who was diagnosed with TCC a couple of weeks ago. She is on 3 mg. piroxicam daily and 25 mcg. cytotec three times a day. She is on Wellness Core kibble. She is still her active playful self. Her appetite is still wonderful (too wonderful at times). She also is 400 mg. cranberry tablets daily. She eats broccoli daily. Her favorite treat is baby carrots but I didn't think about the sugar content so I will stop them immediately. We are down to a rare accident in the house and occasionally a drop or small streak of blood. The tumor will be re-evaluated after a month, along with lab work to check her kidney function. You state no vaccinations. I agree but don't know how to explain this to her groomer and boarder who both require vaccinations to be up to date. Any advice will be greatfully accepted. Thanks.

I just came across this today. My little Maltese, Missy was dx with TCC of the bladder when she was 8 years old. ( Dx with diabetes the year before and had heart murmur) We were lucky in that the TCC tumor was at the apex of the bladder. Surgery scared the heck out of me due to her other problems but after much research and picking the brains of oncologists as well as the confidence in our vet, we opted to have the tumor removed. It's location had much to do with this decision. A portion of her bladder was removed and she came thru the surgery fine and I was amazed at her speedy recovery. It wasn't long before she was 'holding' as she normally did. We opted to not do chemo follow up BUT did the Piroxicam. We had it specially compounded at a pharmacy to 'suit' her small size. Since she was diabetic she required 2 meals a day but the piroxicam was given once per day. I was advised to give pepcid AC before her piroxicam dosing and to give the piroxicam mid meal. ( feed 1/2 meal...give piroxicam.. feed other half of meal. being diabetic she was on a relatively low carb diet. I was given carafate to have on hand in event of seeing any blood in stools ( possible side affect of the piroxicam..... never needed it) Missy later developed other problems.... disc disease and the heart had enlarged and she had congestive heart failure crisis. It was these two issues that caused her demise. It was 1 year 9 months post cancer dx that we had to let her go and she was NOT indicating any problems with her bladder or diabetes at that time. Posts: 1 (07/24/09 02:30:14) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Help, I just dropped my baby girl off at the vets for what i thought was going to be a routine operation. she had been diagnosed with a mammary tumour in feb and had it operated and removed. Its back with a vengence. Now my poor Holly has to have another operation which is twice as big as the first one. the cancer is back, and has spread down to her groin, the vet isnt very hopeful, im so scared. There isnt any treatment options in ireand other than surgery. Shes such a good girl, she was sitting on the floor wagging her tail and talking away (like samoyeds do) while the vet was handing me her death sentence. im broken hearted and havent stopped crying since i left her this morning. Please Please Please if there is anyone who can help me with information how i can save my baby girl, please post it. Holly was a rescue dog to begin with, we think she is about 9 years old. im not ready to lose my baby girl, please if someone can help me.
