I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing my husband and I are going through. In the past 4 months, our three dogs, two beagles and a Min Pin, have all been diagnoed with cancer (they are not biologically related). It's very scary. I have had our residential water tested in fear of our own health, but the results don't show anything toxic. My 7 year old male beagle was diagnosed in Feb 10th with bladder and prostate cancer. We lost him on April 18th. Within two weeks of that, our Min Pin developed two tumors. One was benign and the other turned out to be a mast cell tumor which was removed the first week of May. He is doing well, but we are watching him in case any other tumors appear. On the day he was having his surgery, I found a lump on my female beagle's leg. The vet told us to wait until my Min Pin was feeling better before we removed her lump. We just had her lump removed yesterday and the doctor says it's a cancerous tumor as well (spindle cell). Nobody I have asked has ever heard of multiple dogs in the same household developing cancer simultaneously like this. If anyone has any info, I would appreciate it.

Hi, That is a tough one........What have you been feeding them..what brands Kibble & canned, treats ?? Chemicals in the food.......Where do you live ?? Possible enviormental cause.....
DD might think I'm off on this, but it's a start to find a common link. What has your vet said ?? Do you live close to a University that has a Vet School ?? ~~If there are no dogs in heaven, then I want to go where the dogs are~~

All three are/were on Hills Prescription diet. The min pin and male beagle (that passed) ate Z/D my female beagle eats I/D. That's the first thing I thought of although the vet said the foods were not recalled and are safe (I don't know what to believe anymore. I live near Charlotte, NC.

There have been a few studies on lawn chemicals per the incidence of Lymphoma. The best that could be shown was a casual relationship, but nothing conclusive. A carcinogen that people use to place on their pets in past years was flea powder or those containing carbamyl compounds - a known carcinogen. Most of the common food carcinogens such as Aflatoxin found in moldy grains also hit the kidneys hard. It's more likely a dog will die from kidney failure from such compounds. One can not eliminate the possibility of periodic contamination of commercial foods. Especially given our new found economic trading ties with China. My own personal belief is that we do have an epidemic of canine cancer, and it can be traced back to irresponsible breeding. I'm not referring to just the casual breeding that some people do so as to cash in on selling puppies, or letting the kids experience puppies or some other stupid excuse. But rather the breeders themselves. Where are the professional breeders on this issue? The next time you are around a breeder ask if they have complete medical histories of not only the parents, but the siblings of the parents, and their parents spanning a complete family tree 2 generations back. Then ask them if any of the lines cancer has been detected in, have been taken out of breeding? You'll probably get a vacant stare. For example there has been major progress in the Goldens per eliminating hip dysplasia. It's something that can be seen clearly on the Xrays. But without a family history that excludes cancer? Result is that Goldens have a high incidence of Lymphoma. So do the Labs. My poor Daisy who was 1/2 of each breed didn't stand a chance genetically of avoiding Lymphoma. Once the oncogenes (cancer genes) keep accumulating in the genome, not even hybrid vigor can over come it. The solution of course is to track the family histories, and for the breeders to remove the stock that results in subsequent cancer. The problem is that they would have to eliminate a huge piece of the family tree, since cancer may take up to 10 yrs to show up in dogs. Quite a few breeders would be out of business. I suspect the problem of cancer in our pets will get much worse before the genetic aspect is addressed. |
