Posts: 4 (01/11/03 12:56:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Our 15 year 3 month old "Max" had a softball sized tumore removed from his left side, behind his front leg, on December 6, 2002. The biopsy revealed that Max has hemangiosarcoma. At his age, our Veterinarian and we decided that chemotherapy would be too traumatic for Max. We don't think and hope that the tumors are not in any of his organs. Max recovered very well from his surgery, but we think the tumor is returning near his incision. We will continue to remove subcutaneous tumors as long as he can withstand the rigors of surgery. We will do whatever is necessary to prolong his life with quality. We will not let him suffer, but we don't want to lose him. We have researched the "Navy Protocol". We thought that the Celebrex might be too harsh for Max's stomach, so we started the other two drugs in the "cocktail"...Tamoxifen and doxycycline. We have also changed him to a 30% Protein/ 15% Fat diet. We are going to include any and all supplements (CoEnzymeQ, Beta Carotine, Lycopene, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Arginine, glutamine, methionine, and Vitamin C) that could possibly help him. A complication in this whole process is that Max has been an insulin dependent diabetic for about 7 years. We will closely monitor his blood glucose levels with any changes to his diet and supplements. Max has also been epileptic for 14 years although he has been seizure free for about 3 years! My wonderful friend recently underwent an emergency splenectomy for abdominal bleeding. Her spleen had several tumors however there was not evidence that this has metastized to other organs. At least not at the time of the biopsy. Her last ultrasound revealed some Nodules (which were also present at the time of surgery), which are now questionable for metastic lesions. She is only eight, full of energy and has a 'joy' for life. This was such a shock and the clock ticks quickly now. We saw the doggy oncologist last Wednesday and go in for another ultrasound and possibly a needle biopsy next Tuesday. We are praying our dog is a candidate for a clinical drug trial. Chemo is too costly for us and may only buy us a couple more months. My heart is sick, we are just trying to cope with the diagnosis, trying to plan for "E" day and just keep our beloved pet happy and comfortable. I cannot offer any words of wisdom, but I share your feelings. Hang in there, you are in my thoughts. lg

She had a large tumor on her side that was too involved internally for surgery. We tried two rounds of chemo which only slowed the process. The second round knocked her out and set her up for a secondary infection. We tried the Navy Protocol when she stabilized but found that the cocktail was making her feel worse with no good results. We too left out the celebrex because her stomach was so fragile and we didn't want to start up the symptoms again. We decided that we couldn't let her life come to an end feeling miserable. We took her off everything and just loved her and were thankful for the wagging tail again. This tumor was so aggressive that the vet was amazed by it. Molly, our pup, had good weeks and a few bad days right up to the end. She truly let us know when she had had enough and we let her go. This was one of the hardest days of my life and I continue to struggle with it. There is such a void when they are gone. I realize that I'm probably not telling you anything that you want to hear but my point is that you can always hope and try things that may help but when the time comes know that you did everything. And most importantly enjoy your time with Max and you'll find the strength to do what's best for him. When Molly passed we had her cremated and her ashes are in our living room disguised in a lovely box with her picture next to it. Somehow this has helped. I feel like we still have her with us in a way. My heart is heavy for you and I'll keep Max in my prayers. Best of luck to you all. Sue

Celebrex does have some antiangiogenic properties. Tamoxifen has been shown to have some strong antiangiogenic properties also. But the mystery remains Deoxycycline? I did run across some research that indicated Deoxycycline when applied to established cancer- tissue culture cell lines did have some potent antiangiogenic properties. However, a subsequent study in Rats where they were given Deoxycycline to obtain the same serum levels as that seen in tissue culture, demonstrated no effect. I have also seen Deoxycycline being used as part of Chemo-maintenance therapy <a href="Gulf">www.gcvs.com/oncology/pwc....htm">Gulf Protocol-maintenance with Deoxycycline</a> Given the continuous danger of secondary infection, having the Deoxycycline as part of the treatment probably isn't a bad idea. But it's ability to act as an anti-angiogenesis agent seems in doubt. Additional supplements you might consider which have weak antiangiogenic properties are: Vitamin-A, and Trans-resveratrol.

Our Max has survived 7 weeks beyond his first surgery and diagnosis of the dreadful Hemangiosarcoma. At age 15 yrs 4 months, he is not able to withstand the rigors of chemotherapy. We started him on Tamoxifen and doxycycline on 1-10-03 and on 1-16-03, a huge cocktail of antiangiogenesis agents. He take about 35 pills a day in his "cocktail" along with a very high Protein 33%/Fat 20% and low carb 2.5% diet(Royal Canin "Special"). Max was scheduled for another surgery on 1-14-03. He was already under the anesthetic when our wonderful Veterinarian called to say that the tumors were so large and invasive that it would do more harm than good to operate. He had huge subcutaneous tumors on his side and chest on 1-15-03. The tumor on his chest is gone and the tumor on his side is smaller and is not growing. We have taken digital pictures to insure that we are not deceiving ourselves into wishful thinking. We know that we cannot totally rid Max of this horrible disease, but we are hoping to at least be in control. He takes Tamoxifen, Doxycycline, CoEnzyme Q, Beta Carotine, Lycopene, Arginine, Salmon Oil (Omega-3 Fatty Acids), Glutamine, Methionine, Vitamin C, and garlic pills daily. We are using the shot-gun approach to preserve his life with quality. Several time through this disease, we thought we were going to have to make "The" decision. Sounds like your battle with this disease is working far better than ours. Lady was euthanized last week, she had re-bled into the abdominal cavity so the cancers cells had metastized very quickly. I am glad to hear your friend is responding to treatment. I will contiue to keep you and Max in my thoughts and prayers. I know how stressful this period is, the constant worrying and just trying to cope with the illness on a daily basis. I found comfort knowing we did everything possible to save our Lady, we devoted every minute to her care and comfort. Even at the end, she knew she was loved and we kept her fears to a minimum. She now rests on top of my bedroom dresser and forever in our hearts.

Like you say, the time is very stressful. Everytime Max moves, we jump to make sure everything is okay. We won't let him suffer, and when we see that his quality of life has diminished beyond what we are comfortable with, we will have to also make the decision. Lady was very lucky to have her family love, care, and do everything for her. Max continues to hold his own. His last blood test indicated that the alkaline phosphatase levels were higher than before. Something is possibly happening inside with his liver. If our "cocktail" is working to maintain smaller sized tumors on the outside, we hope and pray the same is going on inside his body. An x-ray showed that his lungs were okay and his heart looked to be a normal size. Our problem now is that we have changed his food to a high protein/fat diet and he doesn't like the food. Do you have any ideas on how to make the food more pallatable? He has to eat three times a day so that we can properly regulate his diabetes and level of insulin. He gets 2 insulin shots per day. Our Max is a strong little fighter. He still has his very independent personality. His bathroom habits are normal and he keeps his pills down. Fortunately for us, Max's hemangiosarcoma was detected subcutaneously first. As aggressive as this horrible disease is, I don't think we would have the fighting chance if, like your Lady, it was detected on an organ. Or try frying some bacon- you get to eat the bacon, and the dog gets the grease. Save the grease, and mix in a little each meal. My puppy has always liked the "Propet" brand (Carnation). The performance formula (30% protein/20% fat) dry dog food looks like little BBs, so they don't have to chew it much. But not many stores carry it.

The stress has been exchanged for grief, different but not better. I have dreams about the ordeal almost everynight, so I know I haven't gotten to the 'acceptance' stage yet. My son also has diffficulty coping (he's 20), he had a very deep and special bond with Lady and misses her terribly. Lady had lost a lot of blood when she first bled from the spleen. I cooked for her from her first day home until she died. I cooked iron rich foods, fresh liver, spinach, decaffienated green tea and brown rice. She loved it! She gobbled up her meds laced into her meal. When she finally had pink gums then I added my concoction to her regular dry food. I also gave her cooked liver 'snacks' throughout the day to keep her red blood cells as strong as possible during this time. I also gave her knuckle bones (her favorite) to keep her busy but quiet during her last days. She always loved to play with her toys and chase the ball, but we were concerned that all the jumping around would cause the bleeding to re-occur prematurely. All she wanted to do is play, we took her everywhere we went (except work) and she spent minimal time home alone. I had promised her that I wouldn't let her suffer needlessly, I knew that when things go bad they can go down hill very quickly. Our vet hospital was teriffic through the whole ordeal. Their support and compassion was deeply appreciated when we needed it most. Gosh, I don't know what we would have done without them, they explained everything answered all our questions and helped us prepare for the inevidable(sp). Good luck with Max, sounds like you to are doing everything conceievable to keep him happy and as healthy as possible. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know it's not the best thing but she couldn't resist the taste. I'd also cook pieces of chicken and bury them in the food so she would have to eat her way to them. She loved fish too so maybe a bit of fish mixed in would entice Max. I would follow Molly around with food ready at all times just in case she would eat. Most of the time it would be a bite here and there. It's so hard when they must eat to help themselves fight this and they simply don't want to. Good luck and Max is in our thoughts and prayers. Sue

We have gotten Max to eat a bit more. On an alternating basis, we mix liver, turkey, chicken, and cottage cheese with his high fat/protein dog food. He probably would eat on his own if we could just let his food out for a while. The problem is that our other boy Winston follows right behind Max and cleans up anything and everything that is left. Also, Max has to have a certain amount of food as close to three times a day as possible to help regulate the two insulin shots he gets for his diabetes. We've had to increase the insulin because of the higher fat content in his food and it seems to be fine as long as we get the three meals into him. Overall, his appetite is much better with the added goodies. He is still on the tamoxifen and doxycycline as well as the other antiangiogenic supplements. He gets about 35 pills over the course of a day. A tumor that was on the front of his chest has shrunk to almost nothing, but the tumor at the original site of his surgery has returned and is getting larger. We have decided that surgery at his age 15 yrs and 4 months would be too traumatic and would not give him any more quality time. He still does not show any signs of slowing down with anything on th inside of his body. The tumor is very hard, uneven and attached to his muscle behind his left front leg and shoulder. However and unfortunately, I have dealt with Hermangio also. Hello all Yesterday my rescue basset was diagnosed with Lympho sarcoma. She recieved a steroid injection into her swollen node (under arm) Became the size of a baseball almost overnight prior to diagnosis. Has shrunk considerable since injection. She is also on an antibiotic and Cytoxan. I will be meeting with Dr. Macy in 2 weeks and will try to keep the board abreast of what's going on. Unfortunately, the last year and a half I lost my female basset to Hermangiosarcoma and my male basset to prostate cancer. I have my new female Rebecca on Cold pressed flaxseed oil and cottage cheese. I will now state my reasons. Daisy, my hermangi basset went through chemo to try to buy that 6-8 month time frame. With no response, I tried the experimental intra-abdominal 5FU treatment. She did tolerate the chemo well but was loosing blood internally. We did many transfusions to help her along when on a Sunny Saturday she had had enough. We put her down in our living room with her mate near by. That was 1 month and about 5K later. Devastated we tried to make sure our male got a lot of attention as he was really down. 2 months later, in September he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. We decided not to do chemo with him as he should have had only 2-4 weeks left. I went on the internet and found info on flaxseed oil and cottage cheese treatment. We gave it a go. He enjoyed and actually experienced shrinkng of the tumor. By November, he decided he didn't want it anymore. The tumor started to grow again and was blocking his urethra (sp). With some help from catheters (I didn't think I could do it) twice a day, we bought another month and on Dec 27th put him down. That treatment gave us 3 months. My new rescue bassets have been on it for maintence for about a month. We will increase Rebecca's intake to twice a day. Hope I wasn't to long but this is a possible cheap alternative to chemo and may help some people. I would recommned researching this. I am doing chemo on Rebecca as there is an 80-90% chance of remission. Much better than the 5-10% with my other cancer dogs.

We noticed a small, what we thought at the time, callous (SP) on our dog's left elbow sometime in Dec. She is a Lab/Shepard mix and I didn't really think much of it. Just recently I decided to have it looked at because it didn't seem to go away. It turned out that it was a tumor and we quickly had it removed. We immediatley had x-rays and an ultrasound done as well as blood work. All three came back clear. No tumors in her body. I understand that they start out as tiny cells and are not seen with x-rays or ultrasound. Our concern is what to do now. Our dilemma is to do nothing or give her chemotherapy. Our understanding is that although the tumor was removed and no signs of other tumors now, they may comeback in time. The strange part about this is that we noticed the mast in December and did not have it removed until just recently. In that time, the cells did not invade any other organs of her body. Any suggestion on if we should play this out or start her on chemo.

There is also the factor of "differeniation" of the cells. The more differeniated the cell the less variable is its DNA. Another way of saying it, is that the cell really wants to become something (e.g. a blood vessel cell). If the cells are classified as undiffereniated, or have poor differination, then it's more likely there will be metastasis or spread of the cancer. So that might be a very good question to ask the Vet: Did the pathology lab claim the cells were well differinated or not? If the report came back that the cells seemed differeniated then you might want to let things ride. If the cells were not differeniated, then considering there seems to be little evidence of metastasis currently, you might want to give a short Chemo cycle of possibly 1 month. The idea is to knock out as many of the microscopic cells as possible. After a short cycle of treatment, wait and see what happens. Note any change in the energy of the dog, along with appetite, and of course any unexplained swellings.

I am completely clueless to all the "DR jargon". Here is the exact wording from the pathologist in regards to sydney's mast. Some of the wording may be mispelled as I am typing it from a faxed report. Description: Examination of the skin tissue submitted reveals a proliferative dermal and subcuntaneous lesion of atypical endothelial cells with large vesiculated nuclei and abundant pale cytoplasm. Some areas are hypercullular with mitoses of 0-2/HPF while other areas appear spingiform with labyrinthine vascular channels occassionally containing RPCs. The mass lesion appears somewhat multinodular and not very well circumscribed in these sections. Comments: Chronic sun exposure may be an environmental factor (she is an inside dog by the way) for some vascular neoplasms of the skin. Consultation with an oncologist may be helpful if further therapy is contemplated. A 2cm diameter excision margin is suggested. When metastasis occurs, it is by hematagenous routes to the lungs and other organs such as the spleen. Re-examination in four-to-six months for local regrowth and thoracic radiographs for possible metastiasis is recommended. This neoplasm appears consistent with an intermediate grade neoplasm.

If so then... The good news is that as you have already noted the tumor was slow growing, and since it was located on a limb as opposed to the trunk that also makes it less likely to be aggressive in spreading. The drug of choice with MCT is Prednisone. Be prepared for a very hungry dog with wee wee problems. Sometimes other drugs can be used such as Vincristine, and Cytoxin which are both tolerated well by dogs. You might ask your Vet about following up radiation to the local site where the tumor was removed- just to make sure you got it all removed surgically. Here's a good reference link: MCT Somewhere I read where antihistamines such as Benadryl help keep down metastasis since the histamine release of the mast cell promotes its spread.

Could the pathologist possibly of have misdiagnosed her??? The report states Hemangiosarcoma. I did not post the entire report just the descriptions and comments. Here is the rest. Because the mast was found on the skin and lab work showed no other tumors in her body, I guess I really just need to get a second opinion. We are praying that even if it is hemangiosarcoma, it is isolated to just the one spot. Microscopic Findings: HEMANGIOSARCOMA Prognosis: Guarded Borders: Orientation difficult - borders too close to call, less than 1mm in some deep and lateral areas.

Sorry about that, I should have read closer. As you can see in the other posts above, Hemangiosarcoma usually is initially detected with internal organs. Short description of it Your case seems atypical which is probably good, and here's a link that says a little about tumors occuring close to the skin: Hemangiosarcoma tumors that arise in the skin are different than other types of hemangiosarcoma Another article which seems of relevance to your case (e.g. Stage I, and localized) would be a study cited where Chemo therapy involving Doxorubicin (Adriamycin), and Cytoxin extends the survival time: See second article down Don't get freaked out about their descriptions of the toxicity of the drugs. Unless the dog is really sick to begin with which your's is not, the Chemo isn't that toxic. Also it's probably not going to be an aggressive therapy, since you are trying to mop up on any microscopic clumps left behind by the surgery. Talk to your Vet about follow up therapy. All the factors appear to be good for your case. P.S. Two months before my puppy was diagnosed with Lymphoma she had surgery for I believe a hemangiopericytoma. The Pathologist gave a diagnosis of "guarded". My Vet explained to me that Pathologists tend to be conservative creatures. When things look good, they indicate guarded. When things look guarded, they indicate poor. Think optimistic!

Posts: 0 (06/12/03 08:45:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Our Dog Called Bear 6/8/03 It was the first week in May when we noticed she "Bear" was favoring her left rear leg. A few days later she had some discomfort also. That was when we took her to the vet. (5/14) The vet at that time recommended x-rays to be taken. The x-rays came back negative, they sent us home with medicine called "Rimadyl." This should have helped with any kind of pain or inflammation. The vet wanted to see her again if anything changed! What we noticed the very next day was that her left rear leg was very inflammed. A couple of days later she had redness on her stomach and her leg. At that time we called the vet. (5/17) They said it was most likely to be bruising causing the redness. They also said to bring her in again if the inflammed leg didn't seem to go down. (5/24) We took her back to the vet. They said the redness didn't look good, and of course the inflammation has not gone down a bit. They recommended to draw blood at the time. The results came back in about an hour. Her red blood cell count was very low also her platelet count was very low. All the other areas came back normal. At this time the vet recommended more tests to be done, but we would have to go to Cornell College where the Hi-Tech Animal Hospital was. This was in Ithaca NY, about 80 miles south of our home. At this time we decided to get a second opinion. (5/27) We brought Bear to another vet that also took one x-ray. They came back negative, they also had little answers, but recommended taking her to Cornell College. (5/29) We brought Bear to Cornell. They drew blood that day, but they were very busy. Bear had to stay overnight, so more tests could be done.(5/30) The next day they took a ultrasound of the left rear leg. Also they took a fluid sample from the leg. The results found were a large mass on the inside of her leg. Also a spindle type cell was detected, usually found in a sarcoma type cancer. At this time they recommended there would be no more testing because it was the start of a weekend. So we brought Bear back home. They suggested to bring Bear back for a cat scan to see if the cancer has spread out of the leg. They also had Bear on Rimadyl. (6/6) We decided to call Cornell College to make a appointment for a cat scan and we left a message but didn't have a phone call returned. (6/7) Bear seemed a little restless and occasionally had a panting type breathing pattern, throughout the day. Around 10:00 in the evening she seemed to be more restless and she had no appetite. Around 11:30. She didn't look so good, and she was restless again. Close to midnight, (6/ she looked dazed and confused. We decided to rush her to a 24 hour emergency animal hospital in Syracuse. Around 1:00 Bear stopped breathing about 2 miles from hospital. We rushed her in, but it was to late! She was already gone. Bear was 10 1/2 years old. Lab/mix. She was our best friend and part of our family. She will remain loved and missed everyday. Bear loved Ice cream, popcorn and cookies. Love, John, Lisa, and Samantha

A few days later she had some discomfort also. That was when we took her to the vet. (5/14) The vet at that time recommended x-rays to be taken. The x-rays came back negative, they sent us home with medicine called "Rimadyl." This should have helped with any kind of pain or inflammation. The vet wanted to see her again if anything changed! What we noticed the very next day was that her left rear leg was very inflammed. A couple of days later she had redness on her stomach and her leg. At that time we called the vet. (5/17) They said it was most likely to be bruising causing the redness. They also said to bring her in again if the inflammed leg didn't seem to go down. (5/24) We took her back to the vet. They said the redness didn't look good, and of course the inflammation has not gone down a bit. They recommended to draw blood at the time. The results came back in about an hour. Her red blood cell count was very low also her platelet count was very low. All the other areas came back normal. At this time the vet recommended more tests to be done, but we would have to go to Cornell College where the Hi-Tech Animal Hospital was. This was in Ithaca NY, about 80 miles south of our home. At this time we decided to get a second opinion. (5/27) We brought Bear to another vet that also took one x-ray. They came back negative, they also had little answers, but recommended taking her to Cornell College. (5/29) We brought Bear to Cornell. They drew blood that day, but they were very busy. Bear had to stay overnight, so more tests could be done.(5/30) The next day they took a ultrasound of the left rear leg. Also they took a fluid sample from the leg. The results found were a large mass on the inside of her leg. Also a spindle type cell was detected, usually found in a sarcoma type cancer. At this time they recommended there would be no more testing because it was the start of a weekend. So we brought Bear back home. They suggested to bring Bear back for a cat scan to see if the cancer has spread out of the leg. They also had Bear on Rimadyl. (6/6) We decided to call Cornell College to make a appointment for a cat scan and we left a message but didn't have a phone call returned. (6/7) Bear seemed a little restless and occasionally had a panting type breathing pattern, throughout the day. Around 10:00 in the evening she seemed to be more restless and she had no appetite. Around 11:30. She didn't look so good, and she was restless again. Close to midnight, (6/ she looked dazed and confused. We decided to rush her to a 24 hour emergency animal hospital in Syracuse. Around 1:00 Bear stopped breathing about 2 miles from hospital. We rushed her in, but it was to late! She was already gone. Bear was 10 1/2 years old. Lab/mix. She was our best friend and part of our family. She will remain loved and missed everyday. Bear loved Ice cream, popcorn and cookies. Love, John, Lisa, and Samantha

Posts: 1 (08/17/03 20:55:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	My beautiful girl Billie (6 years odl this October) has been diagnosed with having Cancer -a Grade 1 type known as Haemangiopericytoma and will require major surgery to excise the lump that is on the top of her hind leg . Billie is in otherwise mint condition from her teeth to the tip of her tail. I have got her started on some Natural Therapies (Essiac ) to aid and abet her recovery following surgery. I was just wondering how others fared and if there were any tips people could offer me to help get my girl through this time.
